The Exploration of Social Adjustment of South Korean Adult Third Culture Kids (ATCK)

Abstract
This study is a case study that explored the psychosocial experiences of South Korean Adult Third Culture Kids (ATCK) in the process of adapting to South Korean society after returning to Korea. Participants were three South Korean ATCK who spent part of their developmental years in English speaking countries. The collected data were analyzed thematic analysis method and the identified themes are as follows. First, all participants¡¯ decision to settle in South Korea was made under the influence of their parents. However, their experiences of social adaptation in South Korea differed based on their own unique perspectives regarding cultural experiences from the past, marriage, and career path. Second, participants experienced benefits from their multilingual skills and social group of similar multi-cultural background. Third, due to cultural differences, adapting to the mainstream of South Korean culture created conflicts and difficulties which made them seek out their career path according to their own solutions. All participants were ultimately positive about their lives in South Korea as ATCK. Based on the results the implications for counseling are discussed.
